DJing seems to be a male dominated industry. When this observation was brought up JES, while agreeing with that assessment, demonstrated that it’s not a reality that she allows to effect her creative process.
I try not to think of it like that. You just have to be great. You just have to be good at what you do. Cream rises to the top, you know. It’s important also to be able to do a lot of these things, like produce and DJ, so you are kind of on the same place as they are [top DJs]. The biggest DJs are also writers and producers, they become artists. It’s important to become the artist. You have to work hard.
No matter your previous experiences, there is always a chance, an opportunity that the next experience will be 100 times better. Having the confidence to over come any negative past experiences and being able to walk into a new one with a fresh start, could make all the difference on how well things turn out.
With a friendly reminder from JES that hard work and determination do pay off, the initial anxiety and doubt fell away, and was rapidly replaced with a clear vision of why we do what we do at Dance Music Northwest. JES made us feel as if there was no difference between us and her, as we all simultaneously hiked our jeans up to the proper place on our hips as we stood up. The impromptu synchronized pants dance was the perfect way to close out what felt like a conversation among friends. To end the night, it allowed us to stroll out of that not-so-stuffy-after-all room, laughing.
