Spotify vs. Soundcloud: Does It Really Have To Be One Or The Other?

We are caught up in a petty conflict. Soundcloud vs Spotify. “Which one do you use? Which do you think is better?” are common questions among the electronic music fanbase. Both music platforms have their disadvantages and advantages, the key is to use both Soundcloud and Spotify simultaneously.

Consumers have access to nearly every album on Spotify and can listen to thousands of hours of mixes on Soundcloud. Spotify’s system to distribute wealth to musicians has created a long-lasting impact on the music industry.

How does an artist get a following to receive a substantial sum from Spotify? Their rival Soundcloud is the best service for new artists because the creators are in control, not the labels. If a track gets enough attention an artist without a label could have millions of people listening to their music.

Selectively using one music service is a bad move. If you only listen to Spotify you would miss out on unofficial remixes from Rezz, Kaskade mashups, and live concert performances. If you only like Soundcloud you lose millions of albums and singles that are exclusively on Spotify. Soundcloud’s monetization for artists is not nearly as good as Spotify’s. Often on Soundcloud, a release is delayed or is a shorter edit of the original track.

The friendly competition between Soundcloud and Spotify is pushing both platforms to be better, and consumers are getting a bargain. The opposing sides work like a relationship between Professor Xavier and Magneto. They have opposing views of how to distribute music, but collectively they are improving the electronic music scene.

What’s your favorite thing about Soundcloud and Spotify? What improvements do they still need to implement? Let us know on Facebook or Twitter?
