As far as Seattle is concerned, NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal has officially solidified himself as a dubstep DJ.
Shaq, who goes by DJ Diesel behind the decks, brought an electric energy to Pioneer Square Saturday night during World Cup weekend.
Everyone was already feeling the excitement after Team USA beat Australia the night before, but Shaq brought it to another level. The set was loud, chaotic, and exactly what the city needed after a day of celebrating.
The crowd was jumping with every song, and there were mosh pits left and right, instigated by Shaq yelling, “Girls, mosh pit!”
Fans were climbing on trees and fences to get a good view, and the city felt alive. Shaq even invited one of the people who climbed the tree on stage with him, calling him Spider-Man.
There were remixes from a collection of genres, ranging from Don Toliver’s song Body, to Dean Turley’s Actin’ Tough, to Disco Lines’ No Broke Boys, to Last Friday Night by Katy Perry. Shaq definitely kept the crowd entertained and read the audience, which was spread out through Pioneer Square’s Brick Park.
While Shaq is known for his hard-hitting dubstep, he mixed a bit of techno in some of the drops, while consistently encouraging the crowd to jump or mosh.
Shaq’s sound had a Flosstradamus type-feel but delivered on the bass like Subtronics. While the style wasn’t the most original, the beats hit every time, and his crowd work is one of the best in the game.
The venue was fully packed for the show, and Shaq made sure to show love to the fans. He was pointing out those having the most fun and stopping to take pictures with people in the crowd.
From start to finish, the whole set was a blast.
If DJ Diesel plays in Seattle again, it’s definitely worth going.
