The DMNW Guide to Electronic Music at Bumbershoot 2014

Manatee Commune

manatee commune

Manatee Commune is the instrumental electronic project of Grant L’Kayl Eadie. A finalist in this year’s EMP Sound Off! Contest, this Bellingham-based act creates gorgeous, airy melodies that transport listeners to other realms. We’ve had the pleasure of seeing Eadie as part of Live in Space! in Bellingham and Seattle, bringing chillwave, bedroom electronic and his classical training to his beautiful, mellow performances.

Sunday 12:45pm @ Pavilion Stage

Golden Gardens

golden gardens

Local duo Golden Gardens create original, alchemical sounds inspired by and related to music boxes and icicles. Raindrops against a window pane. Books being opened and closed at the library. Submerging oneself in the bathtub. Dry leaves being crushed underfoot. Grey skies. Art Nouveau and Art Deco. Recommended for those who enjoy immersing themselves in the gauzy sounds of bands like Cranes and Cocteau Twins.

Sunday 1:30pm @ Pavilion Stage

Hermigervill

hermigervill

Hermigervill is a young upcoming electronic musician from Reykjavík, Iceland. He has released three albums on his own label. His music contains a delightful cocktail of dusty vinyl samples from his bottomless crates of rare records, mixed innovatively with weird synth melodies and scratched vocal samples. We’re calling it fizz pop: light sound, like soda for your years. Hermigervill appears as part of a curatorial exchange with the Iceland Airwaves Festival.

Sunday 2:45pm @ Pavilion Stage

Gold & Youth

gold & youth

Canadian combo Gold & Youth write songs tinged with nostalgic desire. Their music evokes memories of neo-noir Los Angeles, cinematic haze, and midnight solitudes, drawing on aesthetics and instrumentation reminiscent of the 1980s. Dark and expansive synthetic textures are punctuated by programmed drums and interwoven with melancholy vocals, detuned synth melodies, and understated guitars. Their debut full-length, Beyond Wilderness, varies from the cold, industrial sounds of Depeche Mode to the tenderness of Avalon-era Roxy Music.

Monday 12:30pm @ End Zone Stage

Julianna Barwick

juliana barwick

Julianna Barwick’s looped vocal compositions defy easy categorization, but are gaining acclaim worldwide. She’s toured with Sigur Ros; sung with children’s choirs in Krakow and Barcelona; performed at the Guggenheim Museum, architect Phillip Johnson’s Glass House, Yoko Ono’s Meltdown Festival, and Flaming Lips’ Womb Gallery; and been lauded by NPR, The New York Times, Pitchfork, and The Fader. The Guardian puts it this way: “This is music that invites you to lay all cynicism down, to be absorbed by it, and transported.”

Monday 5:30pm @ Pavilion Stage

Young Karin

young karin

The young and mysterious Young Karin hail from Reykjavík, Iceland. Their refreshing sound is influenced by modern day hip hop and avant-garde pop productions and based on creative sampling. The duo’s debut single, Hearts, immediately placed them at the top of the crop of new Icelandic artists. Often compared to the finest of Scandinavian art-pop, they appear as part of a curatorial exchange with the Iceland Airwaves Festival.

Sunday 4:00pm @ Pavilion Stage

Twin Shadow

twin shadow

Twin Shadow is the nom de plume of Dominican-born George Lewis Jr., the bedroom recordist whose carnivorous musical mind has made him a star in the chillwave world. His first two albums, Forget and Confess, garnered praise from the likes of Rolling Stone and Pitchfork and earned him opening slots for Florence and the Machine and The Strokes. His latest single, To The Top, is his most ambitious recording to date, with mammoth choruses, soaring vocals, and anthemic arrangements.

I have wanted to write and share it since I was a kid and I'm a lover of dance music since discovering the scene in 2010. My life motto is "If you can't find time to do it right, how are you going to find time to do it over?"
