Chromeo have proven they think and act ahead of the curve in EDM. Designing a funk/disco revivalist sound before Daft Punk even said “Bring Life Back To Music,” their unique hybrid sound has lead the duo to success. But it has also lead them to near-failure. Their poor quality products include a non-starter sophomore album Fancy Footwork and 2010’s Business Casual. However, their trademark sound and style have strengthened and solidified with each album release.
For their newest album (the racy-titled White Women), the Montreal/New York duo have released Come Alive. The song features Chaz Bundick of Toro Y Moi. It is certainly aimed at making any listener *cough cough* come alive. The track is full of shining bright synths and tiny, air-puffed percussion. Both are chemically designed to get your butt wiggling. The soaring radio-friendly hook and chorus charms, and makes the song Chromeo’s strongest release to date. This new track (as well as some others), their recent late night performance on “Fallon,” and a visual teaser has well-fueled the hype machine surrounding White Women.

The list of feature artists which guest star on White Women is a surprising development in this Chromeo album cycle. The entire list reads like a dream-team roster, featuring some of the biggest names in indie music. Contributions from Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koeing, Solange, LCD Soundsystem’s Pat Mahoney, Fool’s Gold duo Oliver and Chaz Bundwick’s project Toro Y Moi will all appear on Chromeo’s White Women.
On Come Alive, Toro Y Moi has never more sounded more like a boy-band backup vocalist. This direction proves to be another interesting artistic choice for Chaz. Fitting for the once chillwave poster boy who now seems hell bent on changing his image. With his album release, multiple side-project announcements, and scoring video for i-D magazine’s online content, he has completely changed his identity as a musician several times over. No longer a bedroom wunderkid, Chaz Bundick now seems focused on expanding his creative voice. Chromeo released a 2014 tour schedule in part with Come Alive, and there is no release date as of yet for White Women.
