Interview: All about Anabel Englund’s PNW inspiration for ‘Zen Cowboy’

Raised in Southern California, Anabel Englund is a fan of the Pacific Northwest, and proves as much with her latest release Zen Cowboy. Almost two years after a trip Seattle for a show at The Paramount Theatre, which included a visit to the C89.5 studio, Englund is showcasing the impact the stop had on her and her music.

Zen Cowboy is an ode to not only the trip, during which she was opening for Sofi Tukker, but to C89.5 Program Director Ron Chatman’s social media handle. Upon hearing the phrase Englund was instanstly inspired, which happens quite frequently and not exactly on accident, Englund said.

“Words and language to me are powerful and transmute so much energy, more than I believe a lot of people are aware of,” Englund said. “I am always noticing the words people and speak and how it feels in my body.”

Check out Englund’s Instagram Reel detailing the spark of inspiration that culminated in her newest song.

“It was the most beautiful thing,” Englund said regarding playing the song for Chatman for the first time. “I love being able to say I am going to do something and follow through with it. So when I saw Ron… I was elated to play the song for him. He teared up a bit and it was magical to share that experience of everything coming full circle.”

We love our friends over at C89.5, who’ve been the best in the business for more than 50 years. As the long-time home for dance music in Seattle, it’s no surprise the station continues to make its mark on modern-day dance music.

No stranger to creating chart-topping tunes, Englund’s latest solo release is her second single of 2024, following “Get Busy”. She’s hit number-one on the U.S. dance charts several times in the past and (in our completely unbiased opinion) Zen Cowboy is well on its way to following that trend to close out the year.

Zen Cowboy is out now via Ultra Records. You can find it on YouTube, SoundCloud, and weherever else good music is found. Let us know what you think of Anabel Englund’s latest release, and the Seattle-based story behind its origins. You can follow us on Facebook, X, and Instagram, or comment below!
