DMNW: Starting off, I know we’re right out of your Day Trip Seattle set. How are you feeling?
LUMI: I’m feeling amazing. I’m like, I need to bring it. We’re in Seattle!
DMNW: Seattle is somewhat home, right? As you’re originally from Finland?
LUMI: Yes, I’m originally from Finland, but I’ve lived in Seattle for years. Now I’m based in LA. Seattle is basically my hometown; this is where I grew my career.
DMNW: With Day Trip in your hometown, did you tailor your set any differently to cater to your home crowd?
LUMI: Yes, absolutely. I definitely went a little more “housey” for this one. I feel like it depends on the crowd and the party; not every set is going to be the same and it shouldn’t!
DMNW: When I heard your music for the first time, our initial thoughts were, “Nordic ice princess meets ethereal dark techno.” How does that sound?
LUMI: That’s amazing! Yes, I love it.
DMNW: We’re coming up on a year on the founding of your label, SKADI. How has this first year of being a label boss treated you?
LUMI: It’s been good! It’s been a lot of fun. I just release on there every now and then. I actually just did a release on SKADI for my track, FAKE YOU OUT.
DMNW: We’ve been bumping FAKE YOU OUT all weekend long! Your music reminds us not to text our exes; it radiates bad bitch energy.
LUMI: I’m so happy to hear that! Thank you! I fucking love that; I just want to make women feel confident and powerful when they listen to my music.
DMNW: Then you’re nailing it! A lot of your inspiration is based on not only dark techno, but fashion as well. What are some of your fashion influences?
LUMI: I love Korean fashion and some designers from Poland! Also, anything that’s kind of weird and quirky, I’m into it. I love experimenting and being a little different. Trying new styles and putting outfits together; it’s just such a fun time for me.
DMNW: What is your “dream blunt rotation,” but make it the influences of you, your work, your art? These can be DJs, artists, designers, anyone in the world.
LUMI: Oh, shit. This is fun. Gadir Rajab, who designed Raga Malak, Gesaffelstein, obviously, and Lady Gaga, fuck it.
DMNW: Is there anything you’d like to “sneak peek” with us or share any events you have coming up?
LUMI: One of my tracks is coming out on Nervous Records in September so I’m excited about that! I also have a collab coming with Maxinne which I’ve been teasing in my sets as well, coming later this year. So much new music! I’m playing in Finland at Weekend Festival. I went as an attendee 10 years ago with my sister and it was seriously the best time. I also have a set in Chicago coming up later in the year.
LUMI is making it crystal clear she’s ready to leave her mark. With new tracks on the horizon, festival stages across continents calling her name, and a vision that blends style, feminine energy, and pure groove, she’s giving us all plenty to look forward to. Wherever LUMI goes next, we’ll be dancing right there with her.
Important things happen in Pacific Northwest nightlife, and DMNW will send you alerts!
