It’s those rare, magical moments of discovery; unearthing a hidden treasure and making it shine for all to see (and hear). And in the music industry, those rare finds often go on to pass the torch – to explore and discover a special, hidden talent in someone else – to keep the craft alive. So goes the tale of Tiesto, Ken Loi, and Oskar.
It began with Ken Loi – A promising, San Francisco-based producer with high hopes and a natural talent for progressive house. So goes the story of most artists, working hard to fuel the dream of one day making a name (and perhaps a living) for yourself. No one knows quite exactly how it happened – but in one, vibrant flash, Tiesto came knocking on Ken Loi’s door to welcome him, officially, to the music industry.
Soon after, Ken Loi presented his label debut for Tiesto’s Musical Freedom, solidifying not only his presence in the world-wide dance music scene, but setting in stone one often-forgotten truth: Miraculous discoveries can happen at any moment, faster than you could ever imagine.
Having his originals and remixes signed by over a dozen big-name labels including Ultra, Armada Music, and Dim Mak, and the success of his first EP on Big Beat Records, you would think Ken Loi has everything an artist could ever dream of – but his sights were set much higher. He wanted to start his own label: Starbright. And in doing so, he set out to search for the next shining talent who was out there, much like him, awaiting their discovery.
Again.. No one knows for sure exactly how it happened. But Ken Loi’s sound search lead him to the faraway lands of Sweden; a progressive/electro/big room producer Oskar immediately caught his attention, and within a flash, he inquired to know more. Oskar’s genius-like talents and impeccable timing of his latest release, “Brothers” feat. Kat Cobra, lured the wandering ears of Ken Loi in, and from there, a new friendship-turned-collaboration would ultimately become the first-ever release on Starbright Records: “The Wall.”
“The Wall”, lyrically written by Oskar and Kat Cobra, is the ever-relating tale of a teenage girl lost in her world of a broken family, the pressures of growing up, and the isolation of feeling misunderstood. Their writing partnership worked wonders on their previous release, “Brothers,” because Oskar and Kat Cobra really are, in fact, brothers. Turning Ken Loi’s discovery into a double-feature, they decided to include the emotional vocal talents of Kat Cobra into their collaboration to keep “The Wall” in it’s purest form.
The debut Starlight release sets the bar high for progressive house, and for the label alike. We can’t wait to hear what’s next from everyone involved; Perhaps there is another discovery on its way to keep the torch ignited. All we can say is whatever these guys have in store in the future, it will be magic to our ears.
