Meet Hannah Lew: Cold Beat

As a member of the San Francisco post-punk trio Grass Widow, Hannah Lew has tried her hand at creating music on her own and we’re impressed. She calls herself Cold Beat, and has released her first single from the project. Instead of the harmonious, ruffian inspired pitch of three women, Cold Beat focuses on the dreamy abstraction of the emotions of a singular voice. She sings themes of death, internet surveillance, paranoia, and science fiction. Hannah Lew’s “Worms” was written shortly after her father’s death and focuses on the horrors of death. Fear not! Aside from the song discussing jarring aspects of her fathers passing, the track manifests itself as melodious and universal.

“Worms” sounds like a bit straight from a vintage surf-rock movie– breezy guitar riffs, rolling percussion, and murky vocals swimming around in a melodic chaos. Lew is also a visual artist, and Cold Beat’s debut single is accompanied by her film making talents. If you’re not already familiar with her work, “Worms” is a fitting peek into her charming, do-it-yourself world.
