Rusko is an artist who refuses to be pegged as a bass and dubstep guy and just hung up on the wall. After a production haitus, he returns with a five-song EP that seems way out of left field given what we’re used to hearing from him. Sounding more like BassNectar’s most recent work than the heavier bass and dubstep that we’d expect from Rusko, ! is an enjoyable journey through the mind of a great producer who is trying on new sounds and making them instantly feel worn-in and well-loved.
With !, Rusko introduces his own blend of dubstep wobbles, rich synth sounds, funky bass-lines and vocal samples that come together in a harmonious flow worthy of more than one listen. Exploring every possible combination of sound, the production mastermind mixes bass-heavy lines with a funky dnb beat on the opening track, Like A Boss. What follows is an mind-blowing array of sound – everything from glitzy drum-work and soaring synths in Sunshower, to the ass-grinding My Style (our personal favorite!). Rusko chills things a bit with the bass-wave-riding Happy Chords before blasting down the tracks again with an unhinged video game-inspired, bass-tastic Rusko Theme.
