With Thanksgiving and Black Friday behind us, it’s time to look forward to the rest of the holiday season. Time to celebrate family, friendships, and relationships as the year comes to a close and another is just around the corner. It’s time for people to get together and share the joy of giving and community. Unfortunately, not everyone can be with their families for the holidays due to distance or other circumstances, and that’s an issue we’d like to address this season.
In the spirit of giving, community, and PLURR we are challenging our readers to send out holiday (Christmas or otherwise) cards to the elderly as part of a project called The Forgotten Ones: International Card Exchange For The Elderly. Simply get some cards and stamps together, and take a few minutes to wish a lonely person a happy holiday. For someone who may not otherwise receive many cards or attention, it could bring a lot of joy to their day.
It’s up to you how personal you make your card. You could tell this person about your life, include a picture of yourself, include a piece of kandi and tell them about PLURR (add extra postage if you do), or simply wish them “Happy Holidays & Happy New Year!.” No matter how personal, the simple act of taking the time to write and send a card will make this lonely person feel special and loved.
Not every nursing home is this big of a party– brighten someone’s day today!
If you would like, you can send multiple cards to multiple destinations. You also have the option to send many cards to one location. If you would prefer the latter, you can put all your cards in a USPS prepaid box and potentially save some money and hassle. This would be especially economical if you include kandi, since that will probably impose an extra charge for the extra weight.
Pro Tips:
1. Include “Attention: Activities Director” on the front of your envelope unless otherwise directed for that particular facility.
2. Address it to “Any Resident” or “Any Lonely Resident.” Recipients are unlikely to see the envelope so you don’t have to worry about offending anyone.
3. Send a box of cards for reduced postage & to share a lot of love in one place. If you do, feel free to include a note inside instructing that the cards go to the residents who need them the most.
