Makeup & Electronic Music Fusion

Sara’s passion for makeup slowly developed throughout the course of her life, mostly during her time in college. She spent childhood and her high school years participating in competitive dance, which requires you to learn to apply stage makeup at a young age.

“As I got older, I slowly viewed makeup as a form of creative expression and not just ‘make-up.’ The better I became, the more I started to love it and have passion for the looks I created. Body painting is a natural extension for my love of creation.”

Sara began body painting Halloween of 2015, where she used various ideas for inspiration and taught herself to paint. She draws on different elements of makeup techniques to turn characters and makeup into body art pieces. Then, she decided to fuse that passion of makeup with her love of electronic music.

She has always been a fan of electronic music, but this is her first year joining the community and attending shows. Sara’s attraction to the community developed because of the music and colors, and when people reacted positively to her work she wanted to combine the two. Plus, her love for electronic music fits with her artistic style and colors, which inspired her to start bringing her work to festivals.

We first started seeing Sara’s live videos on PKK earlier in January. Sara shares a variety of her looks on the Facebook group, as well as her individual pages. She first decided to go live with her tutorials after receiving several questions and comments about her looks. These aren’t her first live feeds, as she started recording her process as early as Halloween 2016.

When asked about the most difficult part about makeup artistry, Sara describes that it’s not the artistry, but becoming recognizable in a growing freelance industry.

“The most difficult part about makeup artistry is never the artistry itself, but spreading your art work. I find so much joy in my work and the creative process, all the way through application. But, with MUA’s (makeup artists) popping up all over the internet, it’s hard to get your work to stand out from others and be noticed. Being an artist and body painter isn’t a 9-5 type of job. You can only make it a full time career if you’re fully devoted to your advertising and marketing as much as you are you art work, and that can be difficult at times.”

Sara plans to debut her artistry at Lucky 2017, and will be bringing a booth to her campsite at Paradiso. As for other events this year, she hopes to be at any festivals people want to see her at. She continually books weddings and for general “glam” makeup as well. This March, Sara will also be working on an independent movie set. There are several events and shows ahead for Sara in 2017, and she’s looking forward to where her art takes her.
