Paavo of Above & Beyond drops solo album: Deeper Tales (Review)

Well, Anjunabeats fans, it’s finally happened! We were told it was coming, and the moment has finally arrived. Paavo Siljamaki of Above & Beyond has finally dropped his debut solo album, Deeper Tales.

In 2022, the P.O.S. track Thunder & Sunshine was featured on the Anjunabeats Volume 16 album. Then, in October of 2022, Paavo played a solo set at Anjunabeats Open Air in Los Angeles. These hints certainly led all of us to believe that something was on the rise.

Finally, the big official announcement came. The beloved member of Above & Beyond wanted to explore his own individual creativity by reviving his old solo alias, P.O.S.

When you’re one member of a group as big as Above & Beyond, traveling is an integral part of your life. As mentioned in our previous DMNW article, Paavo has stated that P.O.S is his outlet to express the feelings he’s had while being out at sea, traveling the world.

He wants this new endeavor to reflect how connected he feels with nature as he watches the sun rise and set. He wanted to revive this solo project in order to better explore his own creative individuality without any rules or expectations.

In his Instagram post from January, Paavo told his followers,

“Written on my travels in the past few years, the songs are the result of little sparks of inspiration, me experimenting with sound, feelings and grooves to reconnect with dance music….I have felt like rediscovering my love for it all, all over again, on the dance floor.”

Since January, some breadcrumbs were left for us through the release of a couple singles. One of the singles was Lonely River with Kyan and aname. The second track was Polar Bears, a collaborative work with Spencer Brown.

After the singles released, it gave us a glimpse of what Paavo planned on sharing with us for his new album. Paavo recently wrapped up his North American P.O.S. tour, with stops that spanned from Toronto, Ontario to Miami Beach, Florida.

Deeper Tales is a great expression of creativity from Paavo

Finally, on April 21st, his new album Deeper Tales was released. A long awaited and welcomed expression from one of the masters himself. Each song a delicate composition of organic and hard-hitting sounds, as well as uplifting lyrics and melodies.

The album consists of twelve tracks, all individually curated to express different moods of reflection, gratefulness or danceable joy.

Some stand out tracks from the album are certainly Good People, For Those We Lost, and Coming Home. Each uniquely expressive and masterfully produced.

Good People is the second track of the album, brandishing lyrics of positive outlook and thankfulness for the people we love in our lives. This collaborative work with aname, Ercola and Richard Walters certainly pulls on our heartstrings. It brings us a sense of internal reflection and gratefulness for good people in the world who walk with us on our life path. The track finishes with some high energy beats and melodies that seem to answer the intimate call with celebration and spirit.

For Those We Lost is similar in intimate energy. A full ambient composition that seems to compliment deep rooted sentiments for anybody in our lives we are missing. It’s a beautifully composed moment of reflection for the listener. Emotion is absolutely teeming from this track.

Coming Home circles us back to that happy and uplifting energy that Paavo and Above & Beyond are absolute masters at. A time to dance, a time to move our bodies, and a time to party.

All in all, Deeper Tales is a testament to the amazing virtuosity of Paavo, and its no surprise to us that the album is a fantastic expression of individual creativity and emotion.

Will we get a P.O.S. set at the Above & Beyond Group Therapy Weekender?

We certainly hope Paavo continues to bring us more of P.O.S! If you’ve never attended the ABGT Weekender, it’s certainly a must try. Not all acts have been announced yet for the Friday warm up party, but it’s quite possible we may get the privilege of seeing the man himself in action!

The Gorge in Washington State is an amazing venue in its own right and getting to spend the whole weekend listening to the best in trance, techno and house is a much needed escape from the formalities of life.

We hope to see you there!
