Skrillex, Excision, Liquid Stranger, Marshmello. These artists are among the pantheon of EDM who have shaped the landscape of the electronic movement and lifted up countless other artists along their lengthy and successful careers. Among this list there is another name: Dave Tipper. This world-renowned electronic artist will be coming to The Gorge this summer for Tipper and Friends. From July 4-6, Tipper will be bringing an all-star lineup of electronic artists and groups to bring us a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Tipper, hailing from the United Kingdom, started making electronic music in the late 1990s. His first release under the Tipper project was released in late 2000. Throughout his career, Tipper has maintained a level of personal and professional privacy seldom seen in today’s world of DJ superstars akin to celebrities. This intentional lack of exposure has worked to the Tipper project’s strength, making every announcement a surprise, and keeping Dave’s personal and professional life separate. Through his 25-year journey, Tipper has developed a diehard cult following and worldwide recognition for his groundbreakingly unique styles and productions.
Tipper has been around since EDM’s beginnings, and since then, he has left an impact on fans, fellow artists, and the scene as a whole that will truly never diminish. Unfortunately, Tipper and Friends at the Gorge will presumably be one of Tipper’s last live performances, as he has announced that this year he will be retiring from both touring and performing. This makes Tipper at the Gorge all the more special for those of us who have been following his career of stellar releases for decades.
This July Tipper will be returning to The Gorge for the first time in nearly eight years, previously performing there with Pretty Lights. Over the three days, Tipper will be performing three distinct sets, each with its own unique aspects, giving fans three full acts to show his discography in all its variety and sheer volume.
Friday’s performance will be an OG WACOM set, meaning that the set will be accompanied by legendary digital artist and previous collaborator Android Jones. This performance is sure to be a feast for the eyes, with mind-bending visuals and lighting to complement Tipper’s signature sounds. Saturday’s performance will be a Twilight set, which is another of one of Tipper’s past themed performances. This set is described by most attendees to be a journey, usually a two-hour set of more chill and down-tempo songs with a more narrative approach. For Sunday, Tipper’s final set of the weekend will be an Ambient Sunrise set, a first-time performance for Tipper at the Gorge. This seldom-seen set will be yet another one-time-only experience for those attending.
Of course, a Tipper and Friends festival would not be what it is without the Friends. Festival-goers can expect performances from some absolute heavy hitters in the psychedelic electronic scene. Starting off strong, Shpongle’s Simon Posford will be performing a live set, absent of the other half of the Shpongle duo, Raja Ram. This set from one of the pioneers of the psybient genre will surely be an act to remember. Next up, iconic British electronic record producer and musician OTT will be performing a special Twilight set. This will be another unique opportunity to see something few ever have, as his last Twilight set was several years ago and he doesn’t perform often today. Next, The historic Ugandan Egyptian drum and bass musician, producer, and DJ LTJ Bukem will be performing a special Cosmic Twilight set, another performance that has not been seen in several years and is likely to not come back to the region for several more.
Other artists playing over this incredible weekend are Quanta, Globular, Badun, Somatoast, Supersillyus, Evac, Hudson Lee, and Herbalistek. Posters for Tipper at the Gorge have labeled these artists as the Phase One lineup, meaning we can expect to see even more amazing acts join this list of talented musicians coming to the Gorge.
