Get To Know A Genre: Trance

We here at Dance Music Northwest want our readers to be well informed, in order to enhance our community’s appreciation for electronic dance music. For us, that means providing you with the most current news on the scene, informing you of upcoming releases and shows, and now giving you a thorough guide to your favorite genres. In the first of an ongoing series, we present you with the first installment of Get To Know A Genre. In this all inclusive guide, we will give you: A rundown of what trance is technically speaking, a history of the genre with several examples for each era in trance, and a summary of the most common subgenres. Feel free to skip around to the bits that interest you the most, but we promise, if you read the whole thing, you will know the genre like never before.

We look forward to bringing you this sort of history and detail for all of your favorite genres. As always, your comments and feedback are greatly appreciated. Tell us how you feel here or on Facebook. If you think we left something important out or got it wrong somewhere, don’t be shy! We are all part of the community and take you guys seriously.

And, if you’ve just finished this encyclopedia and you’re hungry for more (you crazy Trance freak, you!) we strongly encourage you to check out Neowave’s Roots of Trance series. He breaks down Trance year by year with several fantastic mixes for each and gives you some super rare tracks!

Josh fell in love with Trance at USC's Resolution 2012. It's all been downhill from there as the obsession has grown to a full time hobby in seeking out interesting music across the dance music spectrum and attending crazy parties across the globe.
