“Music has always been a matter of Energy to me, a question of Fuel. Sentimental people call it Inspiration, but what they really mean is Fuel. I have always needed Fuel. I am a serious consumer. On some nights I still believe that a car with the gas needle on empty can run about fifty more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio.”
― Hunter S. Thompson

Some of us are hard-wired to hit the gym consistently, but some of us dread the thought. We all know exercise is key to optimal health, and adding in a great playlist to any workout routine provides major benefits for both new beginners, die-hard yogis, and elite athletes. Music helps drown out the cries of fatigue in our brain by keeping our mind busy by listening, especially energizing music like Dubstep, Drum&Bass and Breaks/Breakbeats. A body in motion stays in motion, so the more we can help our minds and bodies stay moving, the better!

A helpful hint when incorporating music into our exercise routine is finding a great BPM to match! Having the pace of the music match our stride, whether it’s brisk walking or sprinting, helps synchronize our minds and bodies, thus making it easier and more beneficial. Interval training, according to the Mayo Clinic, keeps our bodies from flat-lining and our minds from becoming bored by switching up the pace every couple minutes. We say, get creative! Build a playlist that suits your pace and your duration of time, and you’ll have the optimal workout with the best tunes. Plus, working out releases endorphins, and endorphins make us feel happy!

Still not sold on exercising? A low-impact activity like yoga will still help strengthen and lengthen our muscles and improve overall health without the wear-and-tear on our joints. There’s even a new trend called Conscious Clubbing, encouraging those who hate to exercise but love to dance! While this concept may not be new to us as electronic dance music fans, it just goes to show how beneficial moving our bodies can be, whether it’s zumba or free-spirited festival dance. Plus, getting friends together can help motivate each other’s commitment to better health, so get that impromptu dance party or beach yoga date planned! Be sure to drink lots of water before, during and after any type of workout, and refuel your body with electrolytes afterward.
